Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) Systems work based on the principle that a biofilm is created on moving carrying beds that have a high surface area and are made of polyethylene or a similar material that has a density close to water. These carrying beds provide a wide protective surface area for bacteria growth, which ensures high bacterial concentration in the biological treatment reactor.
In Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR)Systems, it is possible to treat more wastewater in the same reactor volume thanks to the bacterial concentration occurring on a high surface area. For this reason, if a biological wastewater treatment plant that operates on other standard activated sludge systems is transformed into a MBBR system, it is possible to increase the hydraulic capacity of the plant.
Features and Benefits of MBBR Systems:
- Less space requirement
- Ability to operate under high organic and hydraulic loads
- Low operating costs
- High treatment efficiency
- Flexible design that allows for capacity increase
- Simple to operate plants
